San Francisco doesn’t just have seafood restaurants, it practically lives and breathes seafood. Fresh catches come straight off ocean boats and end up on plates across the city, from Fisherman’s Wharf to the Outer Richmond. The best part? You don’t have to pay Wharf prices to get amazing crab or Dungeness in neighborhoods like the Mission or Sunset.

One of my personal favorites, Swan Oyster Depot, has been serving up straightforward, insanely fresh oysters and crab since the early 1900s. It’s standing room only, but grabbing a spot at the counter is half the charm. And if you’ve got time, try a bowl of clam chowder at Anchor Oyster Bar in the Castro , it’s a local classic that doesn’t feel touristy at all.

A quick tip: seafood shines brightest when it’s in season here. If you’re visiting in late winter or early spring, go for Dungeness crab. Summer brings fresh ahi tuna and spot prawns. And don’t overlook the less obvious spots in the Outer Richmond or along 3rd Street. You’ll find casual joints where locals chow down without crazy waits or inflated prices. San Francisco’s seafood scene isn’t just about the view or slogans. It’s about good fish, cooked simply and eaten with a side of city character.
