One of the best monte cristos I’ve ever had! As an sf local, I have been meaning to try this place for years. I was worried it wasn’t going to live up to its hype but alas - it did and I will be back! There is always a line but it moves fast. Upon entering, you’ll order up front where they will give you a number and direct you to the next open table best suited for your party.
I’ve been wanting to try this storied North Beach institution for years, but always avoided it because of the notoriously long weekend lines. We came during the week instead, and got seated immediately. Unfortunately, the experience seemed to suffer from the classic malaise of historic establishments where new ownership can't quite maintain the same level of quality as the founders. The Food: Our table ordered a few of their specialties: the huevos rancheros, eggs florentine, and eggs benedict. Across the board, the dishes arrived cold, the breads were noticeably hard, and the overall execution fell flat. The potatoes were just okay, but nothing to write home about. The Service: While the food came out quite fast, the staff lacked the warm, welcoming friendliness you’d typically expect from a historic mom-and-pop brunch spot. My ultimate recommendation: come for the history and the story, but don't expect a premium meal.
WE WERE SO LUCKY!!! My wife and I were scooting around on Saturday morning looking for breakfast. I've always known about Mama's but the line outside was always a deterrent. By chance, we passed Mama's and there was no line. My wife jumped off and went inside. I parked my Vespa and she came rushing out telling me that there was a table. Awesome!!! It was my first time eating here. I've know of it since the 90s and finally I would be able to enter. The restaurant is very SF and very tidy. The staff were super nice and very attentive. The coffee was pretty decent too. I had the French Toast sampler and my wife had the breakfast sandwich. Both items were excellent. Thanks for a wonderful time this morning Mama's!

Yes, there’s usually a line—but it’s absolutely worth the wait. The food is exceptional. Everything is made with fresh ingredients and great attention to detail. The French toast is perfectly cooked—crispy on the outside and soft inside—and the pancakes are fluffy and full of flavor. The egg dishes, especially the Benedict options, are also outstanding. Portions are generous, and every dish feels thoughtfully prepared. The service is friendly, efficient, and well-organized, even during busy hours. The staff keeps things moving smoothly while still making you feel welcome. The location, right by Washington Square, adds to the overall experience and makes it even more enjoyable. Overall, an unforgettable breakfast spot with amazing food, great service, and a cozy atmosphere. Definitely a place I would come back to and highly recommend.
Mama’s consistently delivers a best in class dining experience with standout execution across the menu. The Montecristo sandwich is rich, perfectly balanced, and cooked to absolute perfection. The Washington Square omelette is exceptional, fluffy, flavorful, and clearly made with quality ingredients and attention to detail. To close it out, the cake crumble is outstanding, indulgent without being overwhelming and the ideal finish to the meal. From entrée to dessert, everything feels intentional and well curated. This place is operating at a very high level and continues to exceed expectations. Highly recommended for anyone looking to enjoy comfort food done right.
