Food was good, but not great. Lots of yummy options on the menu and they were enjoyable. Not to the SF standards in a city of so many choices.
Don't let it's looks from the outside fool you...it's an unassuming and quaint restaurant. No gawdy signs or crazy faux pomp. Do take in the wonderful menu, ask questions, and strongly consider the chef's tasting menu. Excellent 👍.
Last week, my family & I celebrated a birthday having dinner at Octavia. It was okay - not fantastic. Small portions for the price. Good service. Ambiance very rustic - the interior is an older Queen Anne/Row house structure. We ordered sweet potato mochi which has a cinnamon butter at the bottom of the bowl and accompanied a chili oil. Entrées: Wild King Salmon, Squid Ink Pasta and the Duck. The latter was the only substantial item. The salmon has Charon sauce which was overpowering the taste of the fish. The pasta was a nice dish but would not have been filling without the side order of housemade sourdough bread. Dessert: Berry Pavlova plus a surprise tea cake with a candle (nice of the restaurant to recognize the occasion). It was really busy after 6:30pm with local families, gal groups and couples. Def pacific Heights patrons. Overall, it was a pleasant evening but very pricy for what was served.
Delicious food. Did not leave with our socks blown off, but everything was very delicious and my part of three was incredibly satisfied with the prix fix menu. Did not expect to see mochi a dish given the other food dishes we received, but it was done so perfectly. The standout dish was the duck. Absolutely perfectly cooked, moist, and the mushrooms complemented the duck so well. Both dessert dishes were executed phenomenally. Sitting outside turned out to be perfect. It is protected from the elements and heated and provided a way better environment to hold a conversation (inside seemed pretty loud and too warm, in my opinion).
I grew up in San Francisco and live in NYC. I wanted to show my wife some California cuisine while we were in town and I came across Octavia. We did the tasting menu and it was marvelous. Fresh, local ingredients with stunning flavor combinations. We enjoyed every dish thoroughly
