The daytime Alcatraz prison tour is a truly memorable experience. After a 10-minute ferry ride, you’ll disembark on Alcatraz Island and make your way up the steep hill to the top of “The Rock.” Once inside the prison you’ll be delighted with details from the award-winning headset audio tour. Available in Dutch, English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish, it runs like a documentary podcast, with sound effects, background information, and interviews with prisoners and guards. All while you are led to view secrets of the attempted escape, different parts of the prison, and places of dangerous encounters and felons. It’s weird and funky and cold and awesome. Typically, it takes about 3 hours round trip, but you can make it shorter or longer if you choose an earlier or later boat (as ferries leave the island every 30 minutes). You could easily be taken in by the 20-minute history video, sites from the Native American occupation, civil war era buildings, the two bookstores, wonderful gardens, park ranger presentations, small side paths, and/or the beautiful bay and city views. The Bay Cruise component is a separate-departure tour that can be done on the same day as Alcatraz or on any other day, before or after Alcatraz. This easy 1-hour tour on a stable 300-passenger boat makes for smooth sailing. With multiple departures from 11:00 am and the last departure at 6:15pm in summer and 4:15pm in winter, you will have plenty of options. Once onboard, there’s a snack bar with beer & wine, restrooms, and indoor and outdoor decks. Dress to get outside if you can. Whether inside the glass or out by the railing, the fabulous skyline views of Fort Mason, Marina Green, Pacific Heights, Presidio and Historic Ft. Point, Angel Island, and points around the SF Bay will definitely keep your eyes busy. You can move around the boat at your leisure. And you’ll want to, especially as you go under the Golden Gate Bridge! It is quite impressive when seen from below - from out on the deck. Plus, you can learn all about the sites with the included audio tour -- playable via on-board wifi to connect with your phone and earbuds. Or you can simply enjoy the scenic ride and history tour in English via speakers. (The audio tour app is available in English, Spanish, Mandarin, Italian, French, Japanese, Korean, German and Taiwanese.) Even on a sunny day the wind can be strong and the Pacific Ocean moisture can feel cool, so seasonally appropriate layered clothing is recommended. Basically, bring a backpack with extra layers, particularly those that can block the wind. And a skull cap is never a bad idea. It’s a tiny bit of sea faring, so dress for it! Considering how often Alcatraz sells out at the Pier 33 Box Office, this package is often a great way to get a ticket to Alcatraz and make memories going under the Golden Gate Bridge.
