I am obsessed with Kantine! I want to go back and try every dish on their menu. My friend and I ordered the porridges. Both the sweet and savory were fantastic. The food was spectacular. The cafe is filled with hip young people. Getting a table outside is difficult, but I enjoyed sitting inside and watching the kitchen get to work. I will absolutely come back here next time I am in San Francisco!
Kantine is a gem. Minimal Scandinavian interior, a tight but well-curated menu, and nice staff. I went straight for the classics: pickled herring in creamy mustard sauce on rye bread (housemade, rich, but with a kick) and a cardamom bun that was soft, fragrant, and with the right level of sweetness. Coffee alongside made it a perfect lunch. Small charming detail: your order comes with a card bearing the name of a famous person instead of a number. Great spot for a weekday lunch with a friend or to stock up on Nordic baked goods and rye bread to take home.
I’ve been some half a dozen times and I couldn’t recommend this place more. Great smørrebrød, yummy Kanelbullar, accurate Kardemummabullar, Spandauer, and scrumptious Hallongrottor. I always get their Kardemummakaffe, which never disappoints. Congenial staff, with a flag system that tells you about different Danish/Nordic celebrities in various fields while you wait for your food and drinks.
Been wanting to go here for a while and wow it didn’t disappoint- didn’t get to dine in because place was packed so we went with the sandwiches and one of their seasonal pastries (orange, pistachio, and sweet cream). Chickpea sandwich had a lot of flavor and different textures which I loved and overall felt super healthy! Seasonal pastry was also amazing- perfect amount of sweetness and the orange added tartness which gave it a good balance. Loved the vibes of the place and would def come back to try their brunch plate next time
My Norwegian teacher recommended this as a place to try out some true Nordic pastries. It was phenomenal. We loved the danish, morning bun, poppy seed covered croissant, cardamom bun and the chocolate covered chocolate mousse. The strawberry lemonade was also excellent. We sat outside with the dog on a warm day and they kindly brought extra stools to seat all of us.
