Don't let the wait or complaints about service deter you—Good Mong Kok Bakery is an absolute Chinatown staple where quality, flavor, and price point tick every single box. Stock up if you can! Must-Try Highlights: Pork Buns (Steamed, Baked & Pineapple-Topped): Divine across every variation—we devoured every single one. Sesame Balls: Magical texture—perfectly gooey interior with a crisp, toasted sesame seed crunch on the outside. Lotus Leaf Rice Cakes: A standalone meal on their own—super generous in size and bursting with rich flavor. Red Bean Cake: The perfect, lightly sweet finish to cap off a day of eating. Well worth braving the queue and not at all what the critical reviews suggest!
We visited SF for the 4th of July holiday. Saw this recommendation in Instagram. The foods great, no wonder it is so popular. The lines are long. I went on a later afternoon on a Saturday and again on Sunday before noon. They ran out of what I came for Saturday and came back the next day. I would recommend their egg tart, sesame balls, shumai, pot sticker, steamed bun and other stuff. So yummy that I dont care the long lines if I am to go back there. Ill try the noodles next time and other baked meat stuffed goodies. And ILL COME EARLIER. Also parking is a challenge. But there is a near public parking, close to other places to see.
Long line. It took about 15-20 minutes to get in. Line actually moved pretty quickly. Thank goodness they accepted Apple Pay, I didn’t have enough cash on me. Since they did accept cards with a 3% charge, I kinda splurged a bit more with my selection. I got the Turnip Cakes, Chicken Siu Mai, and Chives and Shrimp dumplings. They were good. Servings were large. Ambiance, you can’t sit down, it’s take out only. It’s a hole in a wall sorta place, but serves lots of dim sum dishes. Great place to go for fresh dim sum when in Chinatown in San Francisco.
A Chinatown hole in the wall dumpling spot that makes great dim sum dishes! Not a dine in spot. Only take out. There was a line as I arrived in the morning, but very minimal and the wait may have been a total of 5 minutes. Three cooks were behind the counter taking orders and preparing the food. I ordered the Steamed Pork Bun, Har Gow, Shu Mai, and Pot Stickers. All savory and all delicious as any dim sum restaurant. The Steamed Pork Bun was large and it had more dough than pork. But the dough was very fluffy and flavorful. The pork was tender, sweet and savory. The pot stickers were traditional and flavorful. Crispy on the outside as they're meant to be. The fillings in the Har Gow and Shu Mai were spot on when it comes to consistency, flavor, and texture. If you want the popular dim sum dishes, this is the spot to go to.
Dim Sum Takeout in Chinatown. Prices are still reasonable for Dim Sum, cheaper than most sit down places, and fair quality for takeout. Going in early morning seems to be less crowds and more freshly made food for the day. They now accept credit cards, but 3% additional charge compared to cash. Best that I've tried include the clear shrimp dumpling, egg shrimp/pork dumpling, egg tart, and sesame balls (when available). These dumplings are absolutely filled with shrimp and taste really good. The egg tart is smooth and custard-y without too much egg and the sesame balls are chewy and mildly sweet. Pork buns, while large, don't have too much meat filling and sometimes are a bit wet from leaving in steamers. But for $2 as of April '26 I can't complain too much. Now, the ladies behind the counter are straightforward and want the line to move along smoothly. Some days they do run out of certain items (no egg yolk bun or sesame balls at different times 😭). So go in with some idea BEFORE entering the line and ordering at the counter. Also, don't feel too rushed if ordering multiple items. They started to ring me up before I finished and I just asked for the rest. On one occasion they misheard my order for 2 shrimp dumplings for 6 shrimp dumplings and I didn't realize till after packing my order and paying. Not the end of the world I just had a larger than expected breakfast 😋.
