Reviews
Absolutely fantastic food. They do not hold back the spice. Both the food and service were top notch. It does get crowded and the place is small. Make reservations beforehand. They will greet you with Kung fu tea which I found very cool. Overall I loved everything about the restraunt. I will definitely go there again.
This restaurant in Chinatown is a perfect 10/10. The food is incredible with so many amazing choices. Service is great and although you may have to wait, it’s well worth it! Michelin star, served multiple international heads of state - the door has more prestigious awards than I thought possible… if you go to one place in China town, Z & Y won’t disappoint!
Z & Y Restaurant was a great Chinatown dining experience. The Peking duck was excellent, with a beautiful smoky flavor and perfectly roasted skin. You can really taste the technique behind it. The shrimp fried rice was also very good, flavorful, well cooked, and satisfying. Overall, the food felt authentically Sichuan, bold, aromatic, and full of character. Definitely worth trying if you’re looking for real Chinese food in San Francisco Chinatown.
I was a bit surprised by the comments here, because the actual ratings don’t seem to match my experience, I’m usually hesitant to judge a restaurant, especially when it comes to food from not my background, but for a place associated with the Michelin Guide or positioned in this price range, I think it should at least start with good quality ingredients. I think most people just saying good because Chinese cuisine have a strong fry and good chili oil culture, but that doesn't mean we should just say tasty to every meal that taste like it (referencing the comments). Unfortunately, many of the reviews here feel driven more by hype, after visiting, I noticed a “leave a comment and get a free dessert” sign, which might help explain the inflated ratings. The food wasn’t bad, but in this area there are definitely better and more affordable options, I just want to say, I didn’t try every item on the menu, but I’m not willing to spend $100+ just to fully evaluate the place. I wouldn’t normally be this critical, but the experience was frustrating, especially with waitress asking for the tip and being mad not receiving, added service charge with a table that didn’t even have basic items like salt or napkins. Don't think that I'm mad, this is just a objective review in the end.
The food was delicious and authentic. What was “medium” spicy burned through our throats but tasty nonetheless. The tea-smoked duck was great, but it should be bundled with greens, sauce and wrappers by default cause it makes no sense any other way - it could just be $10 more expensive and come as a package. Other than that the service was good and the overall experience well worth a Michelin Bib-Gourmand.
