Merchant Roots, nestled on Mission Street in San Francisco, offers a boutique fine-dining experience steeped in creativity and theme-driven immersion. This intimate venue provides an ever-evolving culinary journey with meticulously curated themes to delight the senses. Led by the expertise of Chef Ryan Shelton, the team crafts each dining experience from the ground up, ensuring each theme is not just on the plate but in the very air of the dining room. Patrons might find themselves transported to distant locales or fantastical settings, each with its own aesthetic and culinary narrative.

Every three months, Merchant Roots undergoes a transformative process, changing its service format, decor, and even the tableware to align with the new theme. This ensures that repeat visitors encounter an entirely new and fresh experience every time they return. The dining schedules are limited, with seatings offered only on select days, allowing the team to focus on delivering quality and creativity.

Dinner and a show! The theme was Through the looking glass and I felt just like Alice when we walked through the door. From the little drink me bottle at the entrance to the decor to the whimsy with the food and presentation it was so entertaining we can't wait to go back as it changes themes every four months!!! .

This is one of those truly unique gastronomic experiences! Stuff you only see on televisión. The food was out of this world & designed to be cleverly interactive. I will be coming for each quarter as the entirely of the experience rotates with the season. Brava Merchant Roots!!

Amazing and exceptional experience. The whole dining event was exceptional, with fun and innovative ways to experience food. Very on theme. We would for sure return here to see what else the chefs are cooking. And they have a non-alcoholic mocktails pairing menu. Wow.

This place is run by chefs only, and unfortunately, I have to say it shows... We booked one of the last meals from their mushrooms centric menu that had been running for several months. Somehow, despite that longer run time, it seemed like they were still unsure of what the dishes were or how to describe them to diners. The meal itself started off intriguing with the delicious mushroom tea, and overall it was interesting, but to me it felt that more often than not, the flavors were unbalanced or failed to highlight the mushrooms that should have been the center of the meal. The choices on some dishes felt childish at times, prioritizing form over flavors (like the gnome that tasted like nothing but peppers). Perhaps my expectations were too high, but this felt like an amateur chef's meal that while aiming high, doesn't hit the mark and certainly doesn't justify the price point.

Big fan of their concept. I’ve been twice by now, and became a big fan. You’re getting more than just a meal, you’ll move around between different areas of the restaurant, you’ll interact with your food in new and unusual ways, everything is very creative. The food itself is delicious and very worth the investment. You can clearly tell everyone there deeply cares about what they do. Between Color Theory and Feast of the Moss Woods, I’d say I enjoyed the former a bit better, but both were excellent
