I got there a little before lunch and still ended up waiting, but after eating here I understood why people are willing to stand in line. The place is small and has a laid back feel, and watching everything being prepared right in front of you adds to the experience. Once I sat down, the staff kept things moving without making anyone feel rushed. I ordered the fresh oysters, clam chowder, Dungeness crab, and smoked salmon. Everything tasted incredibly fresh, especially the oysters, which barely needed anything added to them. The chowder was thick without being too heavy, and the Dungeness crab was sweet and easy to enjoy on its own. The smoked salmon was another favorite because it had plenty of flavor without overpowering everything else. It is not the kind of place where you linger for hours, but that is part of its charm. The food speaks for itself, and every dish felt like it was prepared with care. I would gladly wait in line again if it meant getting another meal like this.
I lined up at around 10:00 and waited for about two hours. It was a really long wait! Luckily, we could order drinks while waiting. The food was extremely delicious, especially the scallops and oysters. It was such a great experience!
I stopped here because I wanted a seafood meal that felt different from the usual sit-down restaurant experience, and this place definitely has its own personality. It is small, simple, and very focused on what it does. I ordered the clam chowder, oysters, crab salad, and smoked salmon. The oysters were fresh and clean tasting, which is exactly what I wanted. The crab salad was probably my favorite because it was simple but let the seafood stand out. The clam chowder was warm and comforting, while the smoked salmon added a nice change of pace with its richer flavor. The whole thing felt like stepping into a place that has been doing the same thing for a long time because people keep coming back. There is no big presentation, just really good seafood prepared in a straightforward way.
A Century of Seafood Excellence: The Ultimate Counter-Dining Experience 🦀🦪 If you have a bucket list for San Francisco, Swan Oyster Depot should be right at the top. Established in 1912, this Nob Hill institution isn't just a restaurant; it’s a living piece of culinary history. The Experience: Be prepared for the legendary line—I waited over an hour, but the moment you step inside and grab a stool at the antique marble counter, the wait is instantly forgotten. The atmosphere is bustling, nostalgic, and incredibly welcoming, thanks to the veteran crew in their white aprons who treat every guest like an old friend. The Culinary Highlights: The "Crab Back": This is the ultimate "insider" dish. The rich, creamy crab fat (tomalley) served right in the shell is an umami bomb. Dipping their iconic sourdough bread into this is pure heaven. Sashimi-Style Platter: The freshness is unparalleled. From the buttery scallops to the vibrant tuna and salmon, every slice melts in your mouth. You can literally watch them prepare it right in front of you. Dungeness Crab Salad: Generous mounds of sweet, succulent crab meat served over crisp lettuce. It’s simple, clean, and highlights the quality of the local catch. New England Clam Chowder: Creamy, comforting, and packed with clams. It’s the perfect way to warm up while you wait for your cold platters. Oysters: Shucked to order and briney-fresh. They offer a rotating selection of the best Pacific and Atlantic varieties. Atmosphere & Service: The vibe is classic San Francisco—no frills, just world-class seafood and great conversation. The staff’s expertise is evident in every shuck and slice, and their banter adds a unique charm to the meal that you won't find anywhere else. Verdict: Swan Oyster Depot doesn't rely on fancy decor; it relies on the absolute best ingredients and a century of tradition. It is a raw, authentic, and soulful dining experience that defines the spirit of the city. Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (5/5) Pro Tips: 1. Cash Only: They do not accept cards, so come prepared. 2. Timing: Arrive 30-45 minutes before they open if you want to be in the first seating. 3. Patience is Key: The line moves slowly because nobody wants to leave!
We arrived at 9:00 a.m., and after a bit of a wait, were finally seated around 10:30—but it was absolutely worth it. We started with a dozen oysters, a beautiful variety—each one incredibly fresh and full of flavor. From there, we moved on to smoked salmon over bread: simple, but every bite was rich and delicious. The third plate was Sicilian sashimi—wow. Exceptionally fresh, elevated with capers, onions, and a generous drizzle of olive oil that brought everything together with deep, vibrant flavor. We kept going with sea urchin, served alive—an unforgettable experience, delicate and intensely fresh. Next came the clam chowder and a crab dish, both comforting and packed with flavor—great choices all around. To finish, we ordered a prawn cocktail. The prawns were fresh, perfectly prepared, and absolutely delicious—the perfect last plate to end an incredible meal.
