We had a great stay at this hotel. The staff is great, the breakfast was really good too. The hotel is older, but charming and the room was clean. The area was close to everything and felt safe. We'd definitely stay here again.
We originally booked 4 nights but could only stay 1. The biggest issue for my family is the strong old building odor in the hallways. Inside the room, the combination of cleaners and odor neutralizer sprays really gave my wife a headache and even nausea. The corridor smell is reminiscent of my grandmother's old apartment in SF, so it did not affect me as much personally. There is no air conditioning (only a plugin room heating element) so likely the air inside the room becomes stale and the smell just builds up. Opening the room windows for 30 minutes does help a little. Mike at the front desk did all he can to accommodate us, letting us try/test different rooms, but all the rooms still had the same exact smell at the same intensity. The windows are not soundproof, so loud noises like sirens, cable car bells, and groups of people making loud noises all came through to the room (we stayed in room 110). I have to give big props to Mike and Ana who were very understanding and at the end were willing to refund us the 3 unused nights after I explained the situation. The breakfast options is just cereal, waffle, toast, and fruit with typical drink option of orange juice, water, and/or coffee so it's not much of a selection (enough to fill up). The building does have old retro elevators, where the door is a regular swing open door (looks just like a door to a closet) and inside there is a sliding gate. Your fingers can easily get cut off if you stick it pass the gate as there is no other protection when the elevator is moving. Overall if it was just me traveling alone, I would've stayed the entire week. Again big props to Mike and Ana for very great customer service.
For the price, this was an amazing hotel. I liked that you felt you were right in the city - with tons of bars and restaurants around - and that the hotel had charming historic ambiance - the front room with the huge windows and the ceiling alone were impressive! The room was spacious. We had heard maybe to worry about staying in this part of town but it was totally fine - if you went three blocks south you would be in a bad part of town ( Tenderloin) but we just walked east and west. If you walk north you’re in Nob Hill, which has some great restaurants and bars as well.
It was just ok! Employees were accommodating. We booked knowing it was an older/vintage hotel. The breakfast consists of hard boiled eggs, waffles, bananas/apples. They had coffee and orange juice as well. My only issue is that our room had an odd smell. It was the kind of scent you’d smell when you enter an attic. A basement even. Not only that, but our room (of 4 people) only consisted with 2 working plugs. We only stayed for 2 nights, so it wasn’t worth the hassle of moving rooms. The lobby looks a lot nicer. I wish they put more budget towards the rooms. 😅 small, but we made it work with the costs given. Extra pros: -very quiet area -Grocery store to the left of the hotel -In a spot where you can walk almost anywhere! (Union square, the beach, nice neighborhoods, Chinatown)
The hotel itself is very beautiful, it’s historic and well maintained and the location is perfect, close to everything! When we arrived, the room was very clean. However, housekeeping is not provided during your stay. We stayed for four nights and were only given one roll of toilet paper. Since there was no cleaning service, we had to request additional toilet paper and fresh towels to be brought to the room. The included breakfast is quite small, consisting only of hard-boiled eggs, coffee, juice, and waffles. It’s pretty basic, but I suppose it works for a quick breakfast. The coolest feature, without a doubt, is the elevator! It’s a vintage elevator and super cute!!
