We have been coming here for years. If you want a place to just relax and be I the city this is it. You can walk uphill to the Powell or California line for cable cars. They actually stop there and you often can get on. Or keep walking to the stop for the 1 which is our go to reliable and easy to get on. Or take a walk up and over the hill to North Beach or down to Market. Lots of connections. Just don't think you can catch a cable car up the hill from Market. The car is full of tourists. Instead plan a Muni trip and if long enough get a Muni pass to make it all work out well. The place is older and yes no AC. But comfortable with a kitchenette so a walk or ride down to Trader Joe's or a local market is short and easy if you want to cook. Pots and pans and all the things you might need are there. Front desk fills are very nice and security is good l being you leave your key and the door is a buzzer to get in. Like I said been coming for years for at least a week or two and essentially living in the city.
First of all, the location is very central and within walking distance of many places. If location is a priority for you, I think the value for money is excellent. I don't agree with many of the negative reviews; I found the place to be clean. You just need to specifically request trash collection and room cleaning. Whether it's out of respect for privacy or for sustainable resource management, they don't take action on their own. Overall, the hotel is tidy. The lady, who I believe is the owner, is very friendly and polite, and she has a very cute French Bulldog named 'Annie.' You need to leave your key at the desk every time you go out; I couldn't quite figure out if it's because spare keys are costly or if they’re worried about keys being given to others. Some reviews mention there's no elevator, but there actually is one—I'm not sure why people said otherwise. Overall, the price-performance ratio is good, and I think it’s ideal for a family of four.
We own a timeshare here and every year, someone in our family stays here. The excitement and historic air of San Francisco is everywhere here. From the most famous streetcar stopping right out front of Powell Place to the restaurants, theaters, and architecture everywhere. BUY a Muni multiplass for the week $43 ea. It pays off immediately because riding the Powell st streetcar is $9 ea/ per ride. Use Google Maps to navigate streetcars, trolleys, and BART trains to Fisherman’s wharf, Pier 39, Castro district, Golden Gate Bridge, park, museum, theaters and more! It’s confusing at first, but soon you ride like a local. So fun! If it’s raining, try a Waymo robot car, most times, cheap and easy! Again, right out front of Powell Place. We love the staff of Powell Place. They have been there forever. And they are the BEST! The rooms are NOT modern. They’re historic! In the best way. Everything is SPOTLESS, quiet, spacious, quality comfortable furniture, and they think of everything. Coffee, ice, divine bed linens, ceiling fans (no a/c) high pressure instant hot water. Daily SF newspaper. Very romantic!!! Right on Powell St. Yes, you’ll hear the streetcars ringing. Again, how romantic. How San Francisco! Say hi to Helen (manager) and Oscar (front desk, knows everything)! Park at Bush garage, tell them you are with Powell Place - $40/day with one in out daily. Ride the muni to a different district every day. See a play. Eat amazing food! Talk with the streetcar operators. Visit the street car museum! So cool! Enjoy this gorgeous city! 5 STARS!!!
Well located hotel. Rooms in need of a makeover but generally comfortable and have everything you may need as a short term visitor. Untidy entrance, especially office does not give a great first impression and the gentleman on the front desk was particularly unhelpful and unfriendly when we arrived.
